Rongbuk monastery lies near the base of the north side of Mount Everest
at 4,980 m. It is the highest monastery in the world. Rongbuk Monastery
was an important pilgrimage site. Most past and current expeditions who
summit Mount Everest from the Tibetan side make their Base Camp about 8
km south of Rongbuk Monastery.
